How to Stay Productive When You’re Burned Out

Are you as exhausted as I am?

My wedding season just finished up, but I’ve got a backlog of editing to do, orders to fulfill, gear to get fixed, and clients to consult with. That’s just the start of the list and doesn’t include the blogging, marketing, networking, or other activities I do to promote the business and keep growing it.

On top of that, we’ve had a lot of personal things on the calendar lately, our dryer decided to stop working correctly, and it feels like there’s just too many things to do that all need to be done now. Plus I’d like to spend more time with my family.

With everything I’m juggling right now, I’m feeling serious burn out.

It seems like every year when I get to this point, I tend to shut down or lose effectiveness for awhile. I think I just get stressed about everything I have to do, and overwhelm myself a bit trying to keep on task and really get things done.

I jump from one thing to the next, not always finishing the first one, and I stress that I’m choosing wrong and should be doing something else more important instead.

But this week I had a breakthrough.

This week has been one of the most productive weeks I’ve had in awhile, so I thought I’d share what made all the difference.

Write it all down

The first thing I did was start writing everything down that I had to do.

I wrote down the personal stuff and business stuff.

I forgot a few things, but when I remembered them later I took a moment to stop and put them on the list.

Just knowing what you have to do is half the battle of getting it done. Knowing that it was written down somewhere helped me fall asleep knowing I didn’t have to try and remember to do something. That was huge for me.

Make a schedule for yourself

Next I took my to do list and prioritized the things that had to get done first.

Then I wrote down what I wanted to accomplish each day this week. I tried to be realistic about it all, but I told myself I wouldn’t be hard on myself if I didn’t get to everything.

Sometimes things come up that you can’t schedule far in advance, such as consultations and phone calls from clients.

That’s okay. This is why you leave a bit of extra time in your schedule and don’t get down if you get behind a bit.

Cross things off that list!

The nice thing about creating a schedule is that you don’t have to stress about this other thing you still have to do because you know it will be done on the date you put it on, and so you can forget about it at the moment.

The other awesome thing for me was that I didn’t have to take time in the morning trying to decide what was most important to do right away or feel bad about procrastinating on something that should have been done first because everything has its time.

Once I finished for the day, I could be done and take a much-needed break. It was really good.

I’ll continue to do this even after these last few weeks of crazy amounts of things to do because it helps me stay on task and not get distracted.

I’ve made lists in the past, but creating a to-do calendar made all the difference to me.
