One of my goals for The Modern Tog is to create a team to help make this site run as smoothly as possible, making people ask helpful to other photographers as possible.
Not only am I looking for people that can help me, I want this to be a blessing to you as well. My goal is to find people who would both enjoy working with me and provide the services I need. A win-win situation is what I’m after in all possible ways.
Generally speaking, I am looking for someone who is reliable, has a strong commitment to ethics, is teachable and loves to learn, and is fun. I’ll hire someone who loves learning but may be lacking a bit in skills over someone who is not teachable at all but has all the skills any day.
I’m also willing to consider bartering for consulting time instead of (or in addition to) financial compensation if desired. Please let me know if you’d be interested in this when applying.
All positions will start as a temporary assignment to see how things work out for both of us with the intention of moving towards an on-going assignment if the temporary assignment goes well.
Finally, you must have your own business as this position will be filled as an independent contractor role and you will not as an employee of The Modern Tog. An EIN and W-9 will be required before any work will be assigned for all applicants based in the US, and you will be responsible to pay any taxes based on the income earned from this assignment. All income paid will be reported to the IRS, and a 1099 will be provided to you at the end of the year as is needed.
All positions are virtual positions and can be done from anywhere in the world.
Now Hiring: Regular Blog Post Contributor
Because I know there are many of you out there with great advice to share with other photographers that would benefit the entire community, I’m considering adding on a few regular contributors for the blog.
This would be similar to guest posting, except that you’d have an author profile, get paid to post, and would have access to the audience here at The Modern Tog that could help you grow your own blog or business.
Here’s what I’m looking for from a regular contributor:
-Writing a post 1-2 times per month to be submitted by certain deadlines. I am willing to let you “write ahead” so that you can write during the “off season” and we can simply schedule them for the future as needed, so a specific timeframe is not required. Compensation will be paid once the post is scheduled for publication.
-Helpful posts that meet the guest submissions guidelines found here and fit the scope and feel of the site and are well-written needing little to no editing. This is key.
-Selecting and prepping images for posts.
-Someone who is good at explaining things in easy-to-understand ways.
Qualifications I am looking for in a regular contributor:
-Must be very familiar with the photography industry and be able to come up with and write topics that will help photographers grow their business. Only business-related posts will be required, so no photography experience is necessary if you are good at applying online business marketing and business principles to the photography (although photography business experience is definitely preferred). Posts must be original and can not be used or re-written by you for use elsewhere on the web.
-Reliable & meets deadlines.
-Teachable.
-A basic knowledge of SEO
-An understanding of how writing for a blog differs from writing for other types of media
-Basic HTML knowledge
-Experience with WordPress
-Basic image editing (resizing an image & adding text to an image)
-How to write compelling headlines
-Ethical, trustworthy, and ability to keep information confidential.
-Not afraid to ask questions.
***I’m willing to teach some of these skills as needed, so if there’s an area you’re weak, don’t let that keep you from applying. Just mention it when contacting me. Being teachable and quick to learn is far more important to me than having someone who already knows everything***
Additional requirements (non-negotiable):
Finally, you must have your own business as this position will be filled as an independent contractor role and you will not as an employee of The Modern Tog. An EIN and W-9 will be required before any work will be assigned for all applicants based in the US, and you will be responsible to pay any taxes based on the income earned from this assignment. All income paid will be reported to the IRS, and a 1099 will be provided to you at the end of the year as is needed.
How to Apply & Extra Info
If you’re interested, it’s important for me to see a sample of your writing and learn more about you. I’m looking to create a team of people that I can work with closely, so selections will not be made lightly.
Along with financial compensation, there will be the potential to promote your own products if they are quality products that I believe would be a good fit for The Modern Tog, you’d get links back to your own site(s) and a personal bio page. I’d also be available for discussion about your own business ventures from time to time, or would be willing to barter more extensive consulting either for your photography or online business if you prefer that to financial compensation. I really love to help people, and am an open book to those I trust, so I would hope that the relationship would be beneficial to you more than just financially.
Pay will vary based on experience and writing quality and is negotiable. Certain types of posts or pages may receive higher compensation than others based on topic or structure.
Here’s what I need you to send.
1. A guest post, submitted via the guest post submissions page, that can be published and used on the site regardless of if you’ve been selected as a regular contributor or not and would show what kind of writing I can expect from you. This first post would be un-paid if published (although you’d still gain all the benefits of having a post published on the site). Future posts, if selected as a regular contributor, would receive financial compensation. The difference between what I would pay for and consider appropriate from a regular contributor basically comes down to writing style and amount of editing needed. A regular contributor’s post would need little to no editing. A guest post contributor might have a great idea but not be a stellar writer and the post would need much more time to edit it.
Guest posts need to be submitted via the form on the guest post submissions page with a note at the very bottom of the form stating that this post is part of your application in becoming a regular contributor for The Modern Tog. Guest posts submitted via email will not be considered, and you’ll be automatically taken out of consideration for lack of attention to detail in reading this job posting.
2. An email sent to contact@themoderntog.com with a subject of “Regular Contributor Application” sent the same day as the guest post is submitted above with the following information:
– Basic contact information, including any blogs and websites you currently run and/or write for.
– Any current writing experience you have
– What is your area of expertise? What topics would you feel most comfortable writing about?
– Why you think you’d be a great fit for The Modern Tog
– 10 headlines of posts you’d consider writing for The Modern Tog
– Any other information that you think would be relevant for me to know in making my decision.
